For many children, speaking up about something that feels uncomfortable or unsafe is not easy. Children may worry about getting in trouble, upsetting someone, not being believed or not having the right words to explain what has happened. That is why the messages children hear from trusted adults matter so much.

Bub, You Can Tell Me centres one of the most important protective messages we can give children, that they can speak up, and that there are adults who will listen and believe them. Through gentle storytelling and affirming language, the book creates a sense of emotional safety, helping children understand that their voice matters.

What makes this book particularly powerful is its focus on reassurance. Rather than using fear or overwhelming information, it builds confidence and connection. It reminds children that they are not alone, and that asking for help is a safe and brave thing to do. These messages are critical protective factors that support children to seek help when something doesn’t feel right.

The book also highlights the importance of trusted relationships. Children are far more likely to disclose concerns when they feel emotionally safe with the adults around them. That safety is built over time through consistent responses, calm communication and adults who show children that their thoughts and feelings are important.

For adults, this book is also a reminder that how we respond matters just as much as what we teach. Children need adults who listen without judgement, who stay calm and who take their concerns seriously. Even small responses can shape whether a child feels safe to speak up again in the future.

Books like this help create a shared language around safety and communication. They open the door to conversations that many adults know are important, but sometimes struggle to start. Through stories, children can begin to understand difficult concepts in ways that feel safe, accessible and age appropriate.
