Some children move fast, think fast, speak fast and feel fast. Their energy can fill a room, spill over and sometimes feel impossible to contain.

The Lemonade Hurricane captures this beautifully through the character of Henry, a child whose energy swirls like a storm. His sister Emma describes him as a hurricane, not because he is 'too much', but because everything inside him is moving all at once.

What this story does so gently is shift the way we see that energy. Instead of something to control or shut down, it becomes something to understand. Because beneath that busyness is often a child who hasn’t yet learned how to slow their body or settle their thoughts.

Through Emma’s guidance, Henry is introduced to something simple, but powerful ... stillness. Pausing, sitting and breathing. These are not complicated strategies, but for a child, they can be life-changing. The story uses the metaphor of lemonade to explain this in a way children can grasp ... when everything is stirred up, it looks cloudy and chaotic, but when it rests, things begin to settle and become clear.

For children, this is an important lesson in recognising what is happening inside their bodies. It gives them a way to understand that big feelings, busy thoughts and overwhelming energy are not 'bad', they are just signals. And with support, they can learn how to respond to those signals in safe and helpful ways.

For adults, the message is just as important. Not every 'busy' child needs to be told to stop. Sometimes, they need to be shown how. They need co-regulation before self-regulation. They need calm modelled, not demanded.

Books like this create a shared language between children and adults. They open the door to conversations about feelings, energy and what it means to find calm. These are not just wellbeing skills, they are protective factors that support a child’s ability to cope, communicate and feel safe in their own body.

Because sometimes the most important thing we can teach a child is not how to be quiet, but how to find calm within the storm.
